Lao Buddhist Tapestry

An extremely rare, hand-painted Buddhist tapestry, 1m high, 9m long, that according to Laotian ethnologist Ananada Paxaxay reflects the legend of Vetsandone.

"Vetsandone was a holy man who prepared himself to become Buddha. He was descended from a royal family. His name is a synonmym for generosity. He offered everything he was asked for to a point where his palace was emptied of all its treasures. His advisors were outraged at his generosity and banished him from his kingdom with his family. The family moved to the forest and lived close to nature.

God had pity on this man and appeared from heaven in the guise of a Brahman-hunter to ask for, one after the other his children and his wife. As usual Vetsandone gave everything and did not refuse any request. After these difficult tests, God recognized his firm convictions and merits and restored him as king with his family and possessions. He finished his life as the enlightened Buddha".
